Det. Mario Novo died in his home on Monday, Dec. 13, his colleagues tell Daily Voice (scroll down for funeral details).
"This just doesn’t feel real. R.I.P. Det. Mario Novo," Hoboken PBA Local 2 said on social media.
Novo was hired the Hoboken Police Department on July 10, 2003, and graduated from the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute, Class #91, on Dec. 11, 2003.
He dedicated 18 years of his life to law enforcement, during which he was a member of the Hudson County Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) and the Municipal Task Force, before transitioning to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force.
Throughout his career, Novo was the recipient of numerous awards including Mothers Against Drunk Driving Award (MADD), Unit Citation, Investigative Service Award, Exceptional Service Award, Gallantry Star Award, Combat Cross Award, and the Honorable Service Award and more.
"He was an exceptional detective and an even better person," his department said in a news release. "He will be truly missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him."
Visitation will be held on Dec. 15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Becker Funeral Home in Westwood.
A funeral service will be held on on Dec. 16 at 11:15 a.m., at Holy Family Church in Union City, followed by entombment at Flower Hill Cemetery in North Bergen.
"For those of you that did not know Mario, he was a Hoboken Police Detective and was on loan to the Hudson County Prosecutors Office . More importantly, he was a husband, father, friend, and incredible human being," the PBA said.
"Mario always had a smile on his face. A smile that brightened up every room he walked in."
